Sonic VS Mario VS Crash Bandicoot: Part 2

Sonic VS Mario VS Crash Bandicoot: Part 2
By Oliver Earl

The second part in the Sonic VS Mario VS Crash Bandicoot debate, which character had the best racing game in the 32bit era?

Sonic the Hedgehog, who is Sega's mascot had a racing game on the Sega Saturn and it was later re-relaeased on PC. It featured a "running" race between super-speed Sonic, high flying Tails and powerful gliding Knuckles. The racing game was named "Sonic R".

The race was on foot and all characters had their own stats, advantages and disadvantages. What was mainly good was the minigames such as balloon seek and tag mode.

You could also unlock characters, such as Dr. Robotnik and Metal Sonic by collecting special golden tokens hidden in each map.

Now to Mario's racing game:

Mario had already had a racing game on Super Nintendo called "Super Mario Kart" which was a huge hit worldwide. So the one on Nintendo 64 was the sequal (named Mario Kart 64) was almost as successful.

Mario Kart 64 has had many sequels in the future on consoles such as Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube, and was very popular amongst kids because of the 4-player battles and races and it was bundled with many Nintendo 64's.

Mario Kart did not include any unlockable characters but it was more fun to play with friends compared to Sonic R.

Crash Bandicoot had his own racing game on Sony Playstation which was made to directly counter Mario Kart 64.

It was called Crash Team Racing or CTR for short, and was very successful. It uniquely had a great 1 player adventure mode and was still really fun to play with friends. Battle or racing modes.

You could unlock new players and maps in Adventure mode so game play would keep getting better with some characters you may recognize such as Penta Penguin and N. Brio.

All these games are good, two of them having successful sequels, but Sonic R is the only one which is still being made for the PC.

If you have a Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64 or Sony Playstation you should really give them ago. If you are getting a Nintendo Wii, you should be able to download Mario Kart 64 via the Virtual Console download service for a small price.
